Shaun McVicar is a partner in the Melbourne office of Freehills.
Experience
Shaun has been practising in Intellectual Property for almost 20 years and specialises in enforcement of IP rights, IP litigation and dispute resolution. He has acted in leading cases in relation to patent validity and infringement, with a particular emphasis on the pharmaceutical industry, as well as trade marks and copyright. He has also been involved in many cases involving breach of confidential information and is one of Australia’s most experienced practitioners in obtaining and executing anton piller orders.
Shaun’s experience also extends over two continents. For almost five years, Shaun was seconded to Freehills’ associated office in Jakarta, Indonesia, where he headed that office’s IP practice. In Jakarta, Shaun acted for multinational clients such as Nokia, Microsoft, Citibank, Hugo Boss and Reuters. The range of disputes he handled in Indonesia included Indonesia’s first civil case of copyright infringement in computer software, and Indonesia’s first unlawful comparative advertising case
Professional background
Shaun joined Freehills in 1989 and was made a partner in 1995. Shaun has published many articles on intellectual property issues in a range of local and international journals. He has also lectured on Intellectual Property and other legal topics, in Australia and overseas.
Shaun has been regularly recognised as a leader of the Intellectual Property profession in both Australia and Asia and has been named and recommended in publications such as Legal Profiles in Australia and in AsiaLaw Profiles, Asia Pacific Legal 500, Global Counsel and Best Lawyer.
Shaun is co-chair of Freehills’ pharmaceutical focus group.
