Freehills advises AGL Energy Ltd on the construction and maintenance of the largest wind farm in the Southern Hemisphere

AGL Energy Limited (AGL) and Meridian Energy of New Zealand have entered contracts to construct a 420 MW wind farm at Macarthur in Victoria’s south-west. The total capital cost of the project is around $1 billion.

The Macarthur Wind Farm will be the largest wind farm in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the largest wind farms in the world.

Freehills advised AGL on the negotiations with Leighton Contractors and Vestas for two EPC Contracts—one for the construction of the wind farm and one for the construction of the related 500 kV substation.

The Freehills team was led by partner Toby Anderson along with senior associate, Kris Percy, working closely with AGL senior corporate lawyer, Kirstin Mann.

The Macarthur Wind Farm project continues Freehills’ role in advising AGL on the development of its renewable energy asset portfolio. Freehills has acted for AGL in relation to the EPC Contracts and maintenance arrangements for the Hallett group of wind farms in South Australia and the Oaklands wind farm in Victoria.

Freehills partner Toby Anderson said: ‘The Macarthur Wind Farm project involved several different work streams coming together. We were delighted to work alongside the AGL team on such a significant project for the renewable energy sector.’
