Submissions sought on telecommunications interception changes
The Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Amendment Bill 2008, which is intended to amend the Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Act 1979 (Cth), was recently passed by the House of Representatives and has now been sent to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee for consideration.

OFPC releases information sheet on ID scanning and recording proof of identity documents
The Office of the Federal Privacy Commissioner recently conducted a survey of community attitudes to the use of scanning technology by businesses to record customers’ identity documents, such as drivers’ licences. The survey results show that only 18 per cent of people surveyed believed it was acceptable for ID documents to be copied as a condition of entry to licensed premises.

New Communications Legislation Amendment to impose obligations on commercial providers of non-broadcast media content
On 20 June, the Communications Legislation Amendment (Content Services) Bill 2007 was passed by Federal Parliament. When it comes into operation, the new law will impose obligations on commercial providers of non-broadcast media content, including content supplied over mobile telecommunications networks and live streamed material.

New workplace surveillance rules in Victoria
On 1 July 2007, the Victorian Surveillance Devices (Workplace Privacy) Act 2006 came into effect, amending the existing Surveillance Devices Act 1999. The new regime was prompted by the Victorian Law Reform Commission’s 2005 inquiry into workplace privacy.
