Current practice
Anna Sutherland is a partner in the Sydney office, specialising in commercial litigation with a particular focus on corporate regulatory, Corporations Act and competition law disputes and taxation matters.
Industry experience
Anna’s principal matters have involved acting for:
- a major financial institution in relation to a tax dispute involving an international hybrid capital raising
- one of the central parties involved in the James Hardie Special Commission of Inquiry
- General Electric in relation to an Insurance Act Scheme in the Federal Court as part of a worldwide reorganisation of its mortgage insurance business
- Visa International Service Association in relation to issues arising out of the Reserve Bank of Australia’s card networks reform initiatives, and
- UK/US clients in relation to a proposed worldwide scheme of arrangement and its Australian law implications, including international cross border insolvency issues.
Anna has experience in matters involving a range of regulators, including:
- the Australian Securities and Investment Commission
- the Reserve Bank of Australia
- the Australian Taxation Office
- the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, and
- the Independent Commission Against Corruption.
Anna is a firm representative to the Australian Risk Management Association and has a particular interest in regulation and risk issues in the financial services market.
Professional background
Anna holds a Master of Laws degree from the University of Sydney and a Dip. Law (SAB).
Anna has been published in the Journal of Banking and Finance Law and Practice and was a contributor to the chapter on liquidations in the Butterworth’s Australian Corporations Law Service. She has also written a paper which was published as a chapter in Enforcement of Foreign Judgments Worldwide.
Anna is involved in preparing and presenting seminar papers on topics including preparing evidence, expert evidence, legal reasoning and privilege issues.
