Current practice

John Hayward is a consultant in the Perth office of Freehills. He practises in the area of taxation and advises on corporate and business structures and restructuring.

Industry experience

John advises on Australian and international taxation and has an in-depth knowledge of South-East Asian tax issues. He frequently advises foreign investors on structuring their investments into Australia and in dealing with the Foreign Investment Review Board. He also advises Australian companies undertaking and building business operations in other countries. He has many years experience as a director of several public companies and of the Australian subsidiaries of several multinational groups.

John has made a particular contribution to planning and participating in seminars for practitioners and is concerned that lawyers continue education through their professional years. He has been an active member of the Education Committee of the Law Society of Western Australia for many years.

Professional background

He has presented numerous papers on taxation, revenue and corporations law to the Law Society of Western Australia, Taxation Institute of Australia, Institute of Chartered Accountants, Business Law Education Centre, Law Asia and IIR Conferences in Australia and to the Singapore Law Society and other professional and industry bodies in Singapore.

John graduated in law (LLB) from the University of Western Australia in 1965. He joined Freehills in 1965 and was admitted to partnership in 1969. He is a Fellow of the Taxation Institute of Australia and the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

John is the Western Australian based member of the Industry Research and Development Board and has a detailed knowledge of the workings of the R&D Tax concessions and the incentives available for private businesses conducting research and development projects.
