Natalie Gullifer is a partner in the Melbourne office of Freehills, specialising in superannuation and financial services.

Industry experience

Natalie’s principal area of practice involves public offer superannuation funds and corporate employer-sponsored superannuation funds. She advises both trustees and fund administrators on issues including:
  • the requirements of the Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act, including RSE Licensing requirements
  • the Australian financial services licensing and disclosure aspects of the Corporations legislation
  • litigation concerning superannuation matters
  • applications to APRA and ASIC for relief from regulatory requirements
  • fund transfers and mergers
  • trust law issues, interpretation of fund governing rules and general fund administration issues
  • fund documentation such as drafting and reviewing deeds of amendment, administration agreements and other outsourcing agreements
  • member disclosure materials such as reviewing product disclosure statements
  • member complaints and benefit claims
  • privacy requirements
  • family law superannuation splitting legislation, and
  • superannuation aspects of corporate mergers and acquisitions.

She also advises employers on all superannuation matters, including advising on employer obligations under the Superannuation Guarantee (Administration) Act, including advising on all aspects of the ‘choice of fund’ regime.

Professional background

Natalie is a member of the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia and has recently been elected to the Victorian Executive committee of ASFA. She is also deputy chair of the Law Institute of Victoria’s Superannuation Committee. She is involved in liaison on policy matters with ASIC. She has published numerous articles in industry journals and has spoken at seminars and conferences.

Holding a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws with first class Honours from Monash University, Natalie completed her Honours thesis on superannuation law in 1995 and joined Freehills in 1996. In 2003 she completed the ASFA Diploma of Superannuation Management from Macquarie University, having been awarded prizes in three subjects for achievement of the highest national mark. She became a partner at Freehills in 2004.
