Karen prosecutes Australian and international patent applications in the fields of biotechnology, genetics and molecular biology. Karen has a masters degree in intellectual property law from the University of Melbourne.

Professional background

Karen received a Bachelor of Applied Science with Honours in medical laboratory science from RMIT University in 1996. In 2001 she was awarded a PhD in molecular virology from the University of Melbourne. Her PhD studies, undertaken at the Burnet Institute in Melbourne, involved the molecular and cellular characterisation or viruses, particularly in the human immunodeficiency virus.

Prior to joining Freehills Patent & Trade Mark Attorneys, Karen was working as a post doctoral scientist at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in Melbourne. Her work there was in the area of gene therapy and chromosome biology.

Karen is a member of the Australian Society for Medical Research.
