Current practice
Alan’s major area of practice is consumer financial services law.
Alan heads up Freehills’ Consumer Financial Services team and has particular expertise and experience in consumer credit and retail banking law, payment systems regulation and privacy legislation.
He also has significant experience in many other banking and finance practice areas, including corporate, property and project finance.
Industry experience
Alan’s expertise includes:
- the development and distribution of regulated financial products, both under consumer credit legislation and the financial services provisions of the Corporations Act
- advising on significant retail banking related transactions (including co-branded arrangements and loyalty schemes)
- advising on electronic banking and payment systems
- advising on the regulatory and licensing requirements to establish and operate financial institutions in Australia, and
- liaising with various regulatory bodies, including APRA, ASIC, AUSTRAC and the ACCC.
Professional background
Alan has a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honours from the University of Western Australia, a Bachelor of Laws degree from Monash University and a Master of Laws from Monash University specialising in banking and finance law.
Alan has contributed to the LexisNexis Australian Consumer Credit Law Journal and the Journal of International Banking Law.
Alan is a senior fellow of the University of Melbourne and lectures in the subject of consumer banking as part of the Law Faculty’s Master of Laws program.
Alan was admitted to the partnership of Freehills effective in July 2006.
