Secondments

There are opportunities for you to work in our offices in Australia, overseas, with associated law firms, or on client premises, including private and publicly listed corporations, governments and regulatory bodies. Secondments are a highly valued way in which we can help meet our clients needs for specialist expertise and resources. They also provide a tremendous opportunity for our people to gain a first-hand understanding of our clients business operations, drivers and people. This helps our lawyers deliver advice which is practical and applicable—ie ‘commercial’. We encourage all our lawyers to undertake secondments. Secondments can also be arranged to accommodate periods of overseas study or work. We have an extensive range of contacts, particularly in London and major US cities.

As some of our clients are either based overseas or conduct much of their work overseas, from time to time they present opportunities for a Freehills team to be seconded to work on projects outside Australia for a fixed period.
A popular secondment opportunity is to work in the public interest and community law area. For example, in Sydney, some of our lawyers have completed a six-month secondment at The Shopfront Youth Legal Centre in Darlinghurst, which assists homeless or disadvantaged youth.
We encourage your involvement in our diverse secondment program, as it is a valuable part of your professional development as a lawyer. The program provides the opportunity to broaden professional and personal skills through exposure to different work practices, experiences and environments.
